In 2001 or so, an Angel from Filmmaker Heaven appeared to some film producers and distributers at a small company called Palm Pictures and said to them "Do not be afraid, for I bring you tidings of great joy" The men and women were startled and speechless, they gazed in awe at this beautiful winged creature as he continued to speak in a soft spoken voice, "You shall compile a compilation of DVD's. And you shall include music videos, commercials, short films and documentaries, and you shall call them the Directors Label, and they will be the works of Spike Jonze, Michel Gondry and Chris Cunningham and you shall distribute these titles either individually or in a pack. And peace and joy will fall on millions of movie nerds the world over."

The second disc I purchased was Michel Gondry. I love Gondry and I believe he's the best music video director ever. His video's are absolute genius. The first time I saw the video 'Fell in Love with A Girl' I said to myself "Who made that? I have to find out who did that. It's the best video I have ever seen!!!"
I found out and I began to research and see more videos. His videos have a style all to themselves -- no video looks the same. He's got an imagination that is limitless. He see's so much and is able to take his own dreams and capture them on film. Dave Grohl, the lead singer of Foo Fighters speaks about this also in the DVD. Again, not all the works are included in this DVD, and it is frustrating, but that doesn't mean I'm going to bash the makers of the DVD because they forgot some equally brilliant videos, in the introduction Michel confronts this by saying in his heavily broken accent that he wanted quality rather than quantity. Also included are his award winning commercials and some great short films he made years ago. A great DVD to add to the collection.

Unfortunately, I have not yet purchased the Spike Jonze DVD yet. Nor the four other ones that were released in September.

Also, I recently finished reading 'Down and Dirty Pictures' by Peter Biskind. Interesting story too. I had just seen 'Overnight', the documentary about the bartender/bouncer who sold his script to Miramax, had his life changed instantly and just when everything seemed to be going hunky dory, Miramax screws him bad. Well, I picked up the book and began reading it. It's an expose on the Weinstein bros. and their tyranical and devious behaviour towards staff, filmmakers and actors. Interesting stuff filled with real juicy bits about the behind the scenes look at independent filmmaking. Highly reccomended.
