Thirteen Days, or Dr. Strangevoice: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Fake An Accent is the only living document about the Cuban Missile Crisis (I didn't fact-check this, is it?). Starring the illustrious Kevin Costner (who gives the worst Boston/east coast/something accent I've ever heard - jaaaack, tho roshons ahr gohnoh bahm os!) as Kenny O'Donnell, an advisor and close friend to John F. Kennedy (Bruce Greenwood) and his Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy (Steven Kulp of Desperate Housewives). The actors playing Jack and Bobby are both good, and Costner has some good scenes, but most of Costner's scenes are obstructed by his accent. What the film does well though is, in 145 minutes, portray the gravity and the hard decisions surrounding the Cuban Missile Crisis. It was interesting and well-done (the production quality was great). It got confusing in parts and the black-and-white bits didn't always work, but the director did a good job.
My score: 6/10 Coming up: Perfume: The Story of a Murderer |

I started really listening to Joni Mitchell songs last summer. Bought Court and Spark in October-ish, had Blue a few weeks later and I got a crap load of her other CDs for Christmas and my birthday. Long story short: I freaking worship Joni Mitchell. I feel like she has made 6 masterpieces in her lifetime. I am going to run throught them by the numbers based on my iTunes play counts and other things.
I will have listens, which is me adding up the play counts of all the songs on the CD, top 10 songs (play count of the top 10 songs added together), most listened song, least listened, etc. Blue (1971) 10 songs Listens: 103 Top 10: 103 Average : 10.3 Most listened to: California (19 plays) Least listened to: The Last Time I Saw Richard (5 plays) For the Roses (1972) 12 songs Listens: 90 Top 10: 82 Average: 7.5 Most listened to: You Turn Me On, I'm a Radio (13 plays) Least listened to: Judgement of the Moon and Stars (3 plays) Court and Spark (1974) 11 songs Listens: 127 Top 10: 122 Average: 11.55 Most listened to: Same Situation (17 plays) Least listened to: Trouble (5 plays) Hejira (1975) 9 songs * Listens: 71 Top 10: 79 Average: 7.89 Most listened to: Black Crow (11 plays) Least listened to: Furry Sings the Blues (4 plays) Night Ride Home (1991) 11 songs Listens: 61 top 10: 58 Average: 5.8 Most listened to: Cherokee Louise (8 plays) Least listened to: It's All Over Now, Baby Blue (3 songs) ** Turbulent Indigo (1994) 10 songs Listens: 54 Top 10: 54 Average: 5.4 Most listened to: Sex Kills (10 plays) Least listened to: Sunny Sunday (3 plays) Well, there you are. I hope there are people out there who are as obsessed with Joni as I am and who like statistics as much as I do. God bless iTunes's play count. It's so fascinating to me, haha. * I added on 1 song for the top 10, which was the average of the least played and most played song. ** Bonus track from Geffen Recordings CD. |

I, like many other people out there, spend way too much time on the internet. I am registered at the basic websites: Facebook, Myspace, etc. I also do a lot of movie-related websites (Rotten Tomatoes, IMDB). With that said, there's a very little-known website which does not get enough attention amongst the web-o-sphere. This website is Wintallo, run by two of my friends, Ryan and Joel. They are able to pack in a bunch of addicting games, funny videos, and a very unique collection of wise sayings into one fun and easy-to-navigate website. Ryan and Joel are two high-school students who enjoy the same things as all other internet users. They've put everything they love into one website, and their personalities show throughout the website, which is rare among sites like these.
In addition to this, Wintallo also has the standard forum and chat room, where you can go and chat about whatever you want with some cool people. It's not a focused forum, which is nice. They have a collection of "Great Movies", which is a collection of self-produced videos blended in with humorous or good videos that they have gotten from YouTube, Myspace Videos, etc. They also have a collection of games which were carefully chosen so that they only have what they believe to be the best games on the internet. But what sets Wintallo apart from other sites like this is the dedication that Joel and Ryan have. It's frequently updated and meticulously taken-care of. They pay great attention to detail so that the website flows smoothly from one page to the other and so that the interface design is appealing and not too in-your-face. Easily the most unique thing about the website is the "Wise Sayings" section, which includes funny ones; "I was wondering why thebaseball was getting bigger, and then it hit me." (our English teacher said this) and "Why do you press harder on the buttons when the battery in the remote control is dead?" and also includes more serious sayings; "Blessed are they who can laugh at themselves, for they shall never cease to be amused." I assure you that there is no website with a collection of funny/wise sayings as big as Wintallo's. It's a great way to spend an hour or so, just going through a page or two of wise sayings. They'll make you laugh, make you think, and (most importantly) they'll entertain you. I know that I'm not the only one getting a little tired of Myspace, Facebook and YouTube. If you're looking for something fresh and new on the internet, I'd highly recommend you head over to [url=http://www.Wintallo.com]www.Wintallo.com. |

I know what you've been thinking. "When will nagyovafan on Rotten Tomatoes do another list which I will neither read nor ever care about?" Well, ladies and gents. Today is your lucky day! I had the idea to, in my free-time tonight, create a list of my 15 favorite recordings. It's sort of a best list and sort of a favorite list (they're two totally seperate things, but sort of coincide).
I picked this based on the recordings which moved me the most (or most of them did). I like all kinds of music (except country), and I feel like this list adequately justifies my diverse taste in music. That said, you won't see anything from before 1965.F These are the 15 recordings which I can listen to over and over again. I will probably never get tired of any of these songs (hopefully not, at least). Thanks to iTunes, I was able to securely place them in a playlist and put them in an order I saw fit. I also had to cut a few songs. These are the best recordings, and some of the songs had to cut because they were better compositions than they were recordings (Jewel's "Jesus Loves You" and Cat Power's "Hate"). Some songs just barely missed the cut (Tenacious D's "Tribute" and Dido's "Who Makes You Feel". I hope you enjoy my list and I hope that you give these 15 recordings a listen. I hope you will like them as much as I do. Here's #s 15-11. 15. Ryan Cabrera - Hit Me With Your Light A Ryan Cabrera song on a best of list is pretty rare. I think he's an underrated singer/songwriter. His last CD was a very good showcase of his talents. This is Ryan's best vocal performance. I've always found his lyrics to be extremely relatable and I love this recording. When he goes for that G# after the bridge, I get chills. He's a really good vocalist and song-writer. If you think he's just a pretty-boy singer, check this song out. 14. Hoku - Nothing in this World This is a really obscure choice, I know. A song from the second half of a 2000 album that nobody bought. Hoku was one of the lesser-known pop-tarts to enter the scene in the late 90s pop music rise. This song is great, though. Her vocal performance is spectacular. It's a power ballad with strings, guitars, and a chorus behind her. I will probably listen to the song in 10 years and think that it's cliched and corny, but I love it right now. It's an obscure song, but it's a really awesome song. 13. Nirvana - Polly You'll notice that a majority of the songs on this list are big-production-value-full-band-power-ballady sort of songs. Here's one to prove you that those aren't my only sort of favorite songs. This song's lyrics are brilliantly put together by Kurt Cobain. The harmonies are simple and rich and there is just a bass and guitar. It's simplicity is what makes it wonderful. That, or it's twisted lyrics. 12. Red Hot Chili Peppers - Californication This has been one of my favorite songs for a while. The production is slick and the arrangement is sweet. But it's the lyrics and the way Anthony delivers them which put this track above other Pepper songs. "The sun may rise in the east / But at least it settles on the final location". The hook is killer and the band really had their stuff together while putting this together in the studio. I'm sure you know this song. It's a great recording. 11. Snoop Dogg - Tha Shiznit Starting out with an introduction from a radio announcer, he announces the new Snoop Doggy Dogg song. I love Snoop Dogg. I'm not generally a fan of rap music, but Snoop Dogg just tickles me and this is my favorite song from him (the second being "Drop it Like It's Hot"). The whole "Doggystyle" album is amazing. Snoop brings his game to this song and delivers the best rap song ever. With flutes playing over him, Snoop talks about "fly gangsta shit" and "loc-ing every day" like no other rapper can. Stay tuned for 10-5! |

As a sophomore, I was cast in the Company of my high school's production of Miss Saigon! All the main roles went to seniors, a few to juniors. I am really happy to be a part of it. It's going to be amazing. It will, unfortunately, limit my movie-watching abilities, but I will try to get some in.

Wild at Heart (1990)
Directed by David Lynch Starring Nicolas Cage and Laura Dern Score: 8.5 out of 10 While many regard Wild at Heart as one of David Lynch's weaker films, I genuinely enjoyed it. It is my least favorite of the films that I've seen of his, but I haven't seen Dune so I probably shouldn't make that statement. Wild at Heart was recognized for a slew of awards between 1990 and 1991. It won the Golden Palm at the Cannes Festival, got supporting actress Golden Globe and Oscar nominations for Dianne Ladd and got a few Indie Spirit nominations. The film follows Sailor Ripley (Cage in one of his best performances ever) and Lula Fortune (a wonderful Dern), two southern twenty-something lovers. Sailor gets out of prison for manslaughter (the opening scene) and immediately breaks his parole and runs away with Lula. Lula's mom (Ladd) goes after them with help. Lula and Sailor must escape from them and from suspected assassins. The film is bizarre as movies go, but as David Lynch movies go, it's fairly linear in its story-telling. With tie-ins with The Wizard of Oz, this is a great film filled with symbolism and metaphors. In one of the most inspired scenes of the movie and of all the David Lynch's films is when Lula and Sailor are at a rock concert. It's a thrash metal band and Sailor and a man get in a fight. The place is silent. Sailor asks for the microphone and says something to the extent of "I know you guys know this song" and they spontaneously break out into "Love Me", an Elvis song. The band members, clad in leather, sing back-up vocals. This scene is hilarious and one of Lynch's best. There are other very inspired scenes, but the one thing I didn't like about the movie is the "flashback" scenes, if you will. The characters would recall things from their past and the editing of these scenes bothered me a little bit. But, besides that, this movie didn't do anything too wrong. I highly recommend it to fans of Nicolas Cage or David Lynch. |

Welcome back to the list which has been SO popular so far. Maybe my choice for #1 album of the year will garner some attention. Before I do so, I would like to add that I just discovered a lovely artist named Cat Power. I was flipping through my HD channels last night and caught the last 10 minutes of her HD concert special. She was amazing, so I immediately went up and got her latest CD "The Greatest", which would definately be on this list (probably before or after Paris Hilton's CD; I'm going to need to give Ms. Power a few more listens).
Before I give you this years best, I'm going to look ahead into 2007. These are what I anticipate will be my 5 favorite CDs of the new year: 1. Vanessa Carlton - Heroes and Thieves 2. Courtney Love - How Dirty Girls Get Clean 3. Mandy Moore - Wild Hope 4. Maroon 5 - It Won't Be Soon Before Long 5. Dido - TBA 3rd Studio Album But on to the big grande finale of sorts. Are you ready, ladies and gentlemen? I think you are. 1. Jewel - Goodbye Alice in Wonderland ![]() We made it! We finally did it! I absolutely am in love with CD. There is not a track on this CD which I don't like (everynow and then, I'll skill "Long Slow Slide", but that may/may not be because when it copied on to my iTunes, it skipped a little). It's Jewel's last CD with Atlantic Records and it's her least commercially successful CD. A lot of people say it resembles most her first CD "Pieces of You", but I think it sounds closer to "This Way" (my favorite CD of hers; "This Way" is a masterpiece). Either way, it's certainly a better CD than 2003s "0304" which marked Jewel's debut in dance/pop music. I liked "0304", but "Goodbye Alice in Wonderland" is definately refreshing to hear. Jewel is nothing short of an amazing vocalist and songwriter and this CD showcases it. It has everything, from heartbreaking songs about love to giddy, poppy love songs. Jewel's voice shines and her musical abilities shine even more. This is her CD, and that's apparent (where that was doubtful on "0304"). I am going to do my best to not take this CD for granted - she's said that her next CD will be pure country. Key Tracks: Words Get in the Way, Only One Too, Satellite Why it's on my list: I love Jewel with all the love there is to have and this CD is 100% Jewel. She's a brilliant singer/songwriter and I could listen to her CDs til I'm blue in the face. This is the perfect bookend to a great career at Atlantic Records. Score: 10/10 |

Last time on my Best CDs of 2006, you laughed, you cried, and you threw up in your mouth a little bit (it's okay, it happens to the best of us). You waited in anticipation as I left you with a cliff hanger. "What will be the numbers 4 through 1 CDs!?" you cried out loud to yourself. Well, ladies and gents, you will not find out the number one CD of 2006 today. Not yet, but soon. Soon.
I have no other things to add except "Let's get this list-a-going!" 4. Amy Winehouse - Back to Black anyone from Great Britian could tell you that Critic darling Amy Winehouse is Britian's spoiled little brat. Her public behavior has gotten her a lot of attention. But if there are any musicians reading this, I have a message which I learned from her second CD "Back to Black": If you're an alcoholic who decides to go on a coke binge, make kick-ass music and don't screw up the rest of your life." Amy Winehouse falls in the first category of the two and I would say that Pete Doherty falls in the second. "Back To Black is an awesome CD, she uses catchy lyrics ("What kind of fuckery are we?") and awesome soul beats to convey her message. While she seems to be sending mixed messages, there is no doubt in my mind that Amy Winehouse is one talented spoiled little alcoholic brat. Key Tracks: Rehab, Me and Mr. Jones, and Some Unholy War Why it's on my list: Amy is truly a gifted musician. She goes for a simpler sound here than on her first album and she really hits the mark. She's a great singer and an even better songwriter. Score: 9/10 3. Paris Hilton - Paris I know, I know, I know. It's a music CD by Paris Hilton, there's no way that it's remotely listenable. As a fan of the Miss Hilton regime over entertainment, I thoroughly enjoyed this CD. It's pop music at its finest. If you don't like pop music or have a personal issue against Paris Hilton, that's probably why you don't like this CD. However, those with open ears who have heard the album generally tend to think that it's good music. Still think I've gone out of my mind? Let me direct you to this review from AllMusic, who call it "a very good pop album" and say that it's "more fun than anything released by Britney Spears or Jessica Simpson and a lot fresher, too." Key tracks: Jealousy, I Want You, Nothing in this World, Not Leaving Without You Why it's on my list: Because I can listen to it repeatedly and never get tired of it. Paris is a shameless pop record which is brilliantly produced by Scott Storch. Score: 9/10 2. Red Hot Chili Peppers - Stadium Arcadium - Jupiter ![]() The Red Hot Chili Peppers experienced what I viewed as a bit of overexposure this past summer. Between their album selling 1.7 million copies and "Dani California" playing on all the hit music stations, they found themselves to be very popular. I was very excited about the CD. I went out and got it the day it came out and I was not disappointed. Or at least, I wasn't disappointed in Jupiter, the first of two CDs in Stadium Arcadium. It maintains that RHCP sound and experiments with it in good ways. It's a great album, I just wish that Mars was as good. Key Tracks: Hump De Bump, Slow Cheetah, Snow (Hey Oh) Why it's on my list: Because it's another great album from one of the best living, active bands in the US. It's upbeat, has great lyrics by Anthony, and great music by the whole band. Score: 9.5/10 |

Welcome to my Best CDs of 2006 list! I'm going to wait til I see enough movies from 2006 before I make a movies list, but I feel like I've heard enough music this year to make a list. I will admit, I was not able to find 10 CDs which I felt worthy of being on the list, but I felt like 5 wasn't enough, so I have 8. I have a feeling some people will disagree with this list. Music is just as objective as film, so I will preface by stating that I can't stand country music. If you expect to see Brooks and Dunn or Faith Hill on this list, turn around and run as fast as you can back to the Vine.
For me, 2006 in music was more about me discovering older acts. This year, I got hooked on Joni Mitchell, Elton John, and Billy Joel. I also started listening to grunge acts from the 90s, especially Hole and Nirvana. I wasn't really in touch with the new music in 2006. But I still have a list. Without further ado, number 8: 8. Emma Bunton - Life in Mono This is a landmark album for former Spice Girl Emma Bunton. While it was not commercially successful in England, it was released under a major record label. The same can not be said for the other Spice Girls. With a key example being the number 3 single "Downtown", a corny cover of the 60s hit, Emma Bunton establishes a distinct sound. She recreates a 60s pop sound which really suits her voice well. It's sexy, sultry, and easy to listen to. Key Tracks: Undressing You, Life in Mono, and Take Me To Another Town. Why it's on my list: I love Emma. She's sexy, she has an easy voice to listen to, and I love her 60s pop throwback sound. I know it's not a very masculine choice, but the orchestral arrangements are lush and the songs are easy to like. Score: 8/10 7. Shannon Thomas - Brainstorms ![]() Easily the brightest star of Tulsa, Oklahoma's music scene, Shannon Thomas has fans all around the world. This is a weird choice because I'm sure that few people have heard of her. This is my own little way of telling everybody to go out and check her out, because this CD is fantastic, easily the best independent release of 2006 (which means the rest of this list will have familiar faces). You can buy it on iTunes or on her website, which is linked above. With a sound which greatly resembles that of Vanessa Carlton or Natasha Bedingfield, Shannon's voice is sweet when it needs to be, powerful when it needs to be, and her songwriting skills are at a level rarely found in independent music. If this is a just world, she will be signed to a major label in no time. Key Tracks: Don't Be Beautiful, One or the Other, and Always Never Why it's on my list: She's one of the best pop/rock artists out there, and spreading the word is the best way to give her the attention she truly deserves. This is a great CD and deserves to be on more lists like this. Score: 8.5/10 6. Pharrell Williams - In My Mind ![]() Strangely enough, this CD was ranked # 3 on Entertainment Weekly's 5 Worst CDs of 2006. I'm not doing this to spit EW, I liked this album a long time before EW hated it. As a musician myself, I take a lot of inspiration from Pharrell as a producer and musician. I think he's an absolutely brilliant music maker. He can make catchy songs in any genre you want. On "In My Mind", he seems to have multiple personality disorder. Half of it, he's Skateboard P, a bad-ass rapper who gets lots of ladies. The other half, he's an R&B artist who seems a bit more real. Either way, the songs are great. I generally don't like rap, but I like Pharrell because he's an amazing musician and Snoop Dogg because he's a BAMF (which is probably why I like "That Girl". Either way, this is the best rap CD of 2006. Rap gets a bad name, but this is music. Key Tracks: Raspy Shit, Can I Have it Like That, That Girl, Best Friend Why it's on my list: Because it's filled with awesome beats, great raps from Skateboard P, and some of the best production you'll ever hear. Pharrell knows what he's doing in front of the keyboard, behind the mic, on the bass, and producing. He's one of the most talented musicians in the business and this CD showcases it. Score: 8.5/10 5. Nick Lachey - What's Left of Me ![]() After a rough divorce with most disappointing album list-maker Jessica Simpson, Nick made 90 or so percent of this CD, a collection of angsty pop-rock music. I was able to see him in concert in October and it was awesome. This year has been good for Nick. This CD sold more copies in its first week than his debut CD SoulO sold since 2003 (I also own SoulO, haha). Again, this isn't a very manlypick - I think Pharrell and my # 4 pick are my only "cool" picks, but it's a good CD. Nick has a strong voice, and he sure knows how to sing a good power-ballad. He's got a good sound here and I think he should stick to it for his third album. Key Tracks: Ghosts, I Do it For You, and Shades of Blue Why it's on my list: Good question. It's a quality pop/rock CD. It may be tailored toward younger girls, but I can see some form of musicianship in it. Nick has a good voice and he writes good music. Score: 9/10 |

2006 was an okay year for music. It had a handful of great CDs and a handful of bad CDs, also. I will be and have been listening to albums which made "Best of 06" lists and will have a list myself before the end of the year. Before I do that, it's fitting that I list the worst albums of the year as well as a few disappointments.
Worst Albums of the Year: 1. Bob Dylan - Modern Times I know this topped a lot of lists, but it literally makes me hurt to listen to him sing nowadays. I heard "Workingman Blues" and I thought I was listening to Alvin from the Chipmunks. I find it really hard to take him seriously. 2. K-Fed - Playing with Fire K-Fed + Music = 'nuff said. 3. Beyonce - B-Day I hate Beyonce's new music. This CD sounds like it was put together in a week. 4. The Raconteurs - Broken Boy Soldiers Their music is too simple for me to enjoy. Have you ever heard of something beyond the basic rock formula? 5. My Chemical Romance - The Black Parade Emo music just isn't for me. If I hear the lead single on the radio anymore I'm going to throw up. Can you say studio band? The Disappointments of 2006 Evanescence - The Open Door HUGE disappointment for me. I got to the store the day of because "Call Me When You're Sober" was a good song. I didn't feel like I needed to listen to the tracks in advance. I put my blind faith in Evanescence and I was duped. I can't put my finger on it, but there is something about this album which is just SO sub-par. I know I'm not the only one who thinks this. Jessica Simpson - A Public Affair The first single was a little iffy. I loved her last album. Her others weren't very good, but "In This Skin" is great. I had my hopes really high for this album and it turned out to be bad. The only good songs on the album are "B.O.Y." and her cover of "You Spin Me Round (Like a Record)". These two songs don't even have much substance. Good try, Jessica. Maybe next time your CD won't be crap. Taylor Hicks - Taylor Hicks OK. You were really promising on American Idol and then you release THIS? It's just substanceless. Maybe next album they'll let you write the songs. |
