This is considered quite the genre classic. It is one of the first American made films dealing with this kind of zombie (or Ghouls as the film called them). These are... More

What this movie lacks in big budget effects it makes up for in being a a slightly more faithful adaptation of the original source materiel. As with the original story... More

2008 US Director: Chuck Patton
Score: 7
As a “prequel” for a video game I will be the first to admit that this animated feature really doesn’t contain anything new as far as the old finding mysterious aliens in space plot goes. I will also admit, some what guiltily, that I still found some entertainment here. We get a little "The Thing" vibe since the alien force can infiltrate and convert the bodies of its human victims into mutant killing machines. We get a lot of "Aliens" vibe with the armed military/security unit getting in over their heads and with the mysterious sub-plot of the secret goals of the company/government/(in this case)church. That part was never really fleshed out and resolved in the film. I can only assume, never having played it, that the game answers some of those questions, but in my opinion the film should have as well.
Animation wise this was good. Nothing super or “cutting edge” but well animated. The voice work, including Bruce Boxleitner (Babylon 5), is pretty good. The voices fit the animated characters and inflections match the action. The soundtrack is lacking. It seems to be barely there, and when it is, it is barely noticed, adds very little to the scenes, and is pretty un-remarkable. I don’t know how fans of the game liked it. As a stand alone animated feature it contains some entertaining bits and scenes while at the same time really gives us nothing original as far as this type of science fiction plot goes.
