When we're on a mission, I keep count of how many ninja my father kills. He says not to keep count, only to pray for their souls. But if I don't keep count, I don't know how many souls to pray for. So I keep count. So far it's three hundred and forty-two.

They drove a metal bar into her heart – and nailed her detestable soul to the crypt

Allan Grey is a normal man traveling the countryside minding his own business when he encounters a town filled with strange rumors of blood sucking creatures. He conducts some research and begins an investigation to uncover the one responsible for these heinous acts. Will Grey’s studies lead him to his death?

“In the moon struck night, light and shadow, voices and faces, seemed to take on hidden meaning…”

Carl Theodore Dreyer, director of Gertrude, Ordet, The Passion of Joan of Arc, The Spider’s Prey, and Master of the House, delivers Vampyr. The storyline for this film is very disjointed and seemed to be a bunch of ideas crammed into a 70 minute film. Dreyer had a lot of great concepts and he delivered wonderful cinematography and brilliantly selected settings; however, his ideas needed to be further developed and portrayed.

“A human soul in fear of death cried for help!”

The acting in this film was okay, which is surprising since Dreyer did not believe in utilizing actors. He usually selected people he randomly encountered to star in his movies (there were only two actors in this entire film). I loved the setting and what Dreyer tried to do with this film; however, I believe he needed at least 30 minutes more run time to fully bake his idea and further utilize the lead character. This was a worthwhile movie that is worth your time but will not go down as an all time classic. .

“I know I am lost – damned.”

Grade: B-
