Movies like Cloverfield are a fairly new Phenomenon, in two separate categories. The first being the way it was filmed. The second being the promotion of the movie. The only other movie that I can recall that was promoted almost purely on the internet was Snakes on Plane. That was a cheesy, witty summer action flick that was fun in the movie theater but financially a flop. What I took from that is when you promote a film, its best to appeal to the masses (radio, television) and not the nerds (chat rooms, message boards, etc) This Cloverfield movie had some television spots but they gave you very little. A bulk of the information available was only on the internet. I still think that is a stupid way to promote a multi-million dollar movie. We didn't know the NAME of this film 2 months before its release. I think that is irresponsible and I think its arrant marketing.....
