I don't know everything about gangster movies, but I sense this is probably the first one ever made, which makes the 30's possibly the most productive decade in movies (rom-com, screwball, etc).
I've always liked gangster movies, especially from the 30's, and this one is one of the greats! It is amazingly directed, displays some mesmerizing psychological complexity and is performed by great actors, including Douglas Fairbanks's son himself, annoyingly handsome just like the people in the 30's could be. For a minute there I didn't know if Edward G. Robinson's character was likable enough, but that thought lasted a minute since they all get what they deserve.
"Little Caesar" is as good or better than "The Godfather".
Top notch entertainment!
