L'avventura shows us the truth of what love often becomes for people. It's a cruel, ugly, cynical truth... but there you have it. I think this film is also remarkable in its ruthless approach to characters; it really thinks nothing of veering off into new character tangents at the drop of a hat.

The final shot is one of the most chilling I can remember... because the sense of dislocation between the two is so clear and intense, and because it wasn't anticipated by either of them, or by us.
