The Toxic Avenger is a fantastic mix of comic book anti-heroism meets Lloyd Kaufman's unique slapstick view on society at large. An under appreciated satirist, Lloyd Kaufman believes in the American film (as long as it doesn't cost too much). Sure the movie is cheesy, but it's not half as cheesy as Forrest Gump. Films like this play to the arrested development of all those freaks and geeks who NEED this kind of over-the-top underground stimulation. More colorful than a Walt Disney film on acid, more raunchy than Rocky Horror could ever be, and way more fun than any action movie of the last 10 years. Notice that when I say "fun", I am referring to the kind of fun you have when you get together with your old high school drug buddies for a care-free self-destructive night on the town...not that kind of kiddie fun stuff they sell in big budget action flicks like GiJoe and Transformers. Perhaps before watching this film, you should ask yourself 3 questions: 1. Are you easily offended? 2. Do melons excite you? (Be they the kind that are used for fake head crush scenes or the kind that lurk beneath the blouse of every good looking but slightly trashy girl with an awkward sense of fashion.) 3. Would you like to see a deformed, oversized monster brutally execute corrupt politicians, rapists, midget slave masters, sick child killers, and/or people who are cruel to animals? If you answered no, yes, yes, then watch this film ASAP. Like bizarre, twisted noise rock produced on a budget, this kind of movie has to grow on those who are used to hearing the sheeny sounds of Kenny G. Chances are it won't grow on them at all. But for those of us in the know, those of us who grew up in the 1980's and were thrilled by the exploits of Nintendo, Ninja Turtles, and the best splatter films in history, there are few other achievements that outrank The Toxic Avenger. |
