The Stranger (1946)

Posted on 10/23/09 at 10:20 PM Being a big fan of Orson Welles, but never having the opportunity to take a gander at this film, I finally decided to watch another underappreciated classic from an era of excellent films. Orson Welles and Edward G. Robinson dominate this picture; Orson Welles as the escaped Nazi war criminal Franz Kindler, and Edward G. Robinson as the detective tracing his whereabouts after his escape, the entire film only referred to as 'Mr. Wilson'. This Mr. Wilson is far more interesting than Walter Matthau in Dennis the Menace, Edward G delivers a dynamic performance. The thrills are high and so are the stakes for Welles; first he murders a man who came to reunite with him from the old days, then he even kills a dog for disturbing the grave of the murdered man. Things do not get any better when his wife gets involved and he attempts to off her too but to no avail. Considering this is right after WW2 you can tell it has a pretty anti-nazi film, and is considered the first film to show clips of nazi atrocities. I suppose I can understand people not enjoying this film because of their bias of other Welle's productions and attempting to tie them together and compare them, but take yourself away from that and look at this movie as a standalone film. Only then I think will most people appreciate the film for what it is: a classic thriller about an escaped fugitive. Except this time, we aren't cheering for the fugitive, which is weird since Welles' delivers such a great performance he's a character I certainly loved to hate. This movie is a much different 100% than Citizen Kane's 100%; Citizen Kane is a perfect film based on its execution and its sheer revolution for film, while The Stranger is merely a prime thriller and a great example of Welles' diversity in film making.
