The Star Wars Holiday Special (1978)
Agrees With....
Posted on 12/23/08 at 11:54 AM Yes, I've also re-watched my share of holiday favorites, including Christmas Vacation, A Christmas Carol, etc. but here are my first viewings of the past couple of weeks.
Zulu Directed by: Cy Endfield Finally saw Pixar's latest. It is true that this is probably their most innovative film yet, or at least their most unique to the time. As it's been suggested, yes, this film is really a jazzed up throwback to silent era films. And yes, it is absolutely magical. I'd compare it to "City Lights" in many ways. Another film that reminds me of it a little bit is 2003's underrated indie "Northfork" which is also very reminicent of the silent era films It's not like any of the previous pixar films, all of which have traditional narrative structures and dialog. This has neither. It's a loose structure It's a difficult film to talk about because it says so little yet communicates so much. The lead characters say little but "Wallllll eeeeee!" and "Eeeevvvaaaaa!!!" but you feel like you know exactly what they are feeling at every turn. I didn't quite know what to think of it when it was over, but in the two days since it has really grown on my mind. I'll need to see it again to know for sure, but this is certainly an excellent film. 9.0 |

Ha, I had the exact same experience with Star Wars this year. I have to check out more Rifftrax.

If you haven't seen "Road House" w/Rifftrax, make that your next stop. I laughed so hard I literally was rolling on the floor and had tears coming out of my eyes.
Granted...it was an unusual set of circumstances, and my mood helped my laughter...but trust me, it's killer. Try watching it with a few friends over drinks. You'll be laughing non-stop for hours.

Yeah, baby! The Hidden is an awesome cult flick. It's true, I haven't seen it in quite some time (which I will rectify), but the image of a skimpy skirt-wearing Claudia Christian wielding a huge shotgun is always with me.

While she was hot, it was more just the "badass" factor that worked for me here. Watching some alien dude take over someone's body, and drive a Ferrari really fast while blasting 80's metal appealed to the inner child in me. Made me want to shake my fist in the air and laugh at the same time.

I just watched WALL-E today and am also not sure what to think right now. But it was beautiful. And I cried. Maybe I can get a more coherent review together in a couple of days.

Yes, it was beautiful, and while I didn't cry, I understand wanting to. It was very emotional. Some of the scenes where they were screaming "Wall-EEEE!" and "Eevvvvvvvaaaaaa!!!" were quite touching. Like I mentioned...amazing how much emotion they got out of those little words and a few visuals.
