Dead Pit (1989)
Agrees With....
Posted on 2/2/09 at 3:24 PM There was one thing about The Dead Pit that I will always remember. When I was younger, and use to go to the local video rental store, I would always play with the box to this movie because the main zombie on the cover had eyes that would light up. I hate to admit it, but that was about the only thing to this film that I still absolutely love (I wish the DVD for the film would light up). Still, I can't say that I fully hated watching The Dead Pit. Brett Leonard's The Dead Pit starts off rather annoying with a frustrating opening credits. But it does contain some creepy stuff, mainly the hidden basement in the mental institute where Dr. Ramzi (Danny Gochnauer) has been torturing patients of his, and burying them after they die. After the opening, the movie does slow down a bit, but not all together in a bad way. The Dead Pit felt like it was an Italian horror flick (think Dario Argento) that was filmed by someone who had a fondness for 80's slasher flicks. I have to admit that it was an interesting mix of two genres. I liked the psychic aspect to The Dead Pit, and I really loved the goriness from all of the zombie's antics. I just wish there was more zombie action than the film provided. Cheryl Lawson, as the film's damsel in distress Jane Doe, was one of the better scream queens in horror history. Danny Gochnauer was decent as Dr. Ramzi, but I felt he was better in the zombie form of Ramzi than the human version. And all of the actors playing zombies, well, I wish they were given better direction. Sure they get to kill a lot of people, but they all run around like they are wearing crap-filled diapers. There are a lot of questions I had at the end of The Dead Pit. Like how come these zombies know their way around a car's engine? Or how come this mental institute just happens to have the materials to make a bomb? But I won't hark on all of that. I liked The Dead Pit in the end. It is an extremely flawed film, but still an enjoyable zombie flick. |
