Bio Zombie (2000)
Agrees With....
Posted on 10/7/08 at 2:48 PM It wouldn't be a Halloween celebration for me if I didn't watch and review a zombie film. Thanks to Netflix, I've been able to check out a lot of movies that I've been meaning to see, but couldn't find to buy or rent. Bio Zombie is one of those films. Asian horror has emerged as being among the better horror films of this generation, and I was curious to see how a comedic zombie flick would play out from a Chinese production company. I like the way Bio Zombie starts off. We hear our two heroes off camera as they are sitting in a theater trying to bootleg a movie playing. Funny enough, the opening credits to Bio Zombie are actually the opening credits to the film these two are bootlegging. Not all that side-splitting, but I thought it was an ingenious way to open the movie up with. Our heroes, Woody (Siu Chun Chan) and Bee (Chan Sum Lee), are two unlikable guys. They are rude, treat people like dirt and even rob shop owners nearby their VCD (kind of like a VHS movie, but on CD for those who don't know this format) shop. But that is part of what makes this movie work. I like the whole unlikely hero aspect to films like this. Though, it doesn't work as well as Shaun of the Dead's cast of characters did. Bio Zombie does contain some nice gory moments, but at times the film feels timid about showing it. Also, there is one particular zombie that when he attacks, the camera does this shaky-cam effect that is annoying. I did like how the movie added video game elements to the action sequences. It worked a lot better here than it did with the first House of the Dead film. There is one scene that I think stands out above all. It features Woody and Bee being interrogated by two police officers in split screen. I won't give away too much, but I wanted to point out this scene for those who do see this flick. It offers up the strongest laugh for the film. As a zombie film, Bio Zombie is mediocre at best, but its antics are enough to win me over. |

It just occured to me that I don't think I've slated any zombie movies for my Halloween celebration!
Vampires, werewolves, ghosts, demons, voodoo (without zombies but with killer dolls), insane killers, extra-dimensional horrors, mad scientists... but no zombies!
Maybe "Contagion" (which I hope to see this weekend) will turn out to be a zombie movie. :)

Yeah, it wasn't until I was midway through Bio Zombie before I realized that this was the first zombie film I had watched. Weird that went unnoticed, since zombies are my favorite monster.
