Rate these 3 Fritz Lang films...

Rate these three Fritz Lang films:

Metropolis (1927)
M (1931)
Fury (1936)

Having started using Icheckmovies.com, it really lit a fire under my *** to get out and watch a wider variety of movies. As I hadn't seen Metropolis since college, I found it amongst a set of several other Fritz Lang DVD's on Ebay. So I've watched the three above, plus another called Woman in the Moon, but I was almost falling asleep throughout that one.

Metropolis is a mind-blowing view of a futuristic society where the elite frolic in gardens and lower class workers slave underground.

M is the hunt for a serial killer targeting children in a large city in Germany. Peter Lorre is brilliant in his first starring role.

Fury was Lang's first American production and stars Spencer Tracy as an innocent man accused of kidnapping who is attacked by a lynch mob. He is apparently burned to death when the jail is set on fire, but actually survived and is now orchestrating a trial for the lynch mob through his brothers.

Metropolis - 8/10
M (1931) - 9/10
Fury (1936) - 8/10

M and Metropolis are both excellent. Not seen Fury.

I watched A Woman in the Window and Scarlet Street recently. Skip em.

Do not skip any Lang expect Man Hunt, You Only Live Once, and Western Union.

Metropolis is probably my second favorite silent film.

I don't *think* I got those with the others I purchased, but can't be sure. If I did, I'll just watch them for sake of completion.

I'd strongly recommend Fury... Spencer Tracy is brilliant.

He's Dick Fucking Graves and a fellow Philadelphian. I have to at least give him the benefit of the doubt.

What's #1 for you wolfy?

Out of the limited silent films I've seen, my favorite is The General.

Metropolis: 9
M: 10
Fury: 9.5

Metropolis is great, but its take on class is kind of a joke.

Metropolis depicts class issues using a pre-early 20th century model that is no longer valid for contemporary issues since the rise of the knowledge worker and other technological/social advances in the developed world.

But the basic idea of large lower working class opposing a relatively small well-off upper class can still apply to today's society, no? Especially in a country like, say, India or China. It may not apply to the United States or many European nations, but in other countries I'd say it's still quite valid.

Metropolis - 9/10.
Very loony, but very entertaining.

M - 9/10.
Peter Lorre is amazing in this.

They're the only two Lang films I've seen.

And those are not just great for the actors. You can't really go wrong with Lang, except for those abysmal Indian adventure movies he made in the late 50's. From what I've seen at least, Der müde Tod, Dr. Mabuse: ein Bild der Zeit, Die Nibelungen, Metropolis, M, Das Testament des dr. Mabuse, Fury, You Only Live Once, Ministry Of Fear, Scarlet Street, Woman in the Window & The Big Heat are all good to great to excellent movies. Secret Beyond the Door is also fun, and Human Desire & House of the River are merely OK. Der Tiger von Eschnapur though... *shudders*.

The Big Heat
Scarlet Street
The Woman in the Window

I was fortunate to see those two masterpieces on the big screen accompanied by a live Wurlitzer. Actually, Oaktown could have been there too.

Well, I re-watched Metropolis last night.

I remembered there being a story posted here a few months ago that Criterion was going to release a new DVD that had a bunch of missing footage from the other prints that have been floating around for decades. Is there any update on that? I checked Criterion's web site but I didn't see any updated information on a Metropolis release.

And I totally want to build that robot.
