It's partially a dig at Beck hysteria. The mother being not just sad that her daughter is dead but that it wasn't Glenn Beck instead is obviously a dig in that direction.

It's also really obvious given some of the dialogue and the fact that they chose the douchiest pictures and videos of Glenn Beck ever that someone at The Onion really hates Glenn Beck.
