So what? John Wayne once played Genghis Kahn. You're suggesting that an American HAS to be cast as Captain America?

As long as the person they hire looks like him, is a good actor and can speak English without using an accent, I don't give a damn if he's from Communist Russia.

Am I dreaming, or did the guy who played Kirk's dad in Star Trek already get the part of Captain America?
No, he got Thor. In which case, I nominate Chris Pine for Captain America.

![]() Thomas Kretschmann has the perfect blend of hard-edged masculinity and gentle vulnerability to play Captain America. He's German though, so I'm sure "some people" wouldn't want him to play Cap. Especially since he was born in East Germany- though, he was kind of a badass. At 19, he escaped East Germany on foot crossing 4 borders with no passport and less than $100 (modern equivalent, at least) on his person. He's also got a killer physique- as a high schooler, he was considered a young prospect for future Olympics as a swimmer. ![]() People may also have trouble swallowing him as Captain America because he's been type-cast as a blonde-haired, blue-eyed Nazi soldier in 90% of his film career.

Captain America may actually be the most egregious example- he doesn't have supernatural or extraordinary powers, he was an ordinary man who through the power of science achieved the peak physical conditions a man can ever have. Not crazy super-powers, but just the highest echelon of physical perfection a man can have. He's almost defines the Nazi ubermensch himself, plus he's a blond-haired, blue-eyed one who did it for love of his country.

Maybe a joke in revisionist history, regardless of if we fought the Germany, that ideal man/woman has been present within Western Aesthetics for decades prior to WWII. He would have been drawn that way regardless, maybe absent blonde and blue.

Here's why: In the late 1930s, nothing was bigger than the book, Gone with the Wind. We really don't have a concept of just how big it was. When it was announced they were going to make a movie from the book it was equally big news. The casting of the film became an obsession. Polls were taken to see who people thought should play Rhett and Scarlett. When it was announced they had cast a British actress to play Scarlett it created a stir. Once the movie was released however, no one complained (who could complain about Vivien Leigh's performance?). The ultimate proof that you cast the right actor and everything will work out. I dare say the casting of Capt America carries only a tiny fraction of the public interest that Scarlett did. And if the actor does a good job, no one will care. (If he sucks though...d'oh!)

Does Cap. America have a script yet? Is it still based around WWII or are they going to modernize it ala what they did with Iron Man?
